This painting captures the dramatic moment when Jesus calms the raging storm on the Sea of Galilee. As He sails with His disciples, a violent windstorm suddenly arises, waves crashing into the boat and fear gripping into the disciples’ hearts.
At the centre of the chaos stands Jesus, calm and full of authority. With arms outstretched, He speaks to the wind and waves: “Be still” (Mark 4:39). Instantly, the sun breaks through. Behind Him, the disciples are terrified, and overwhelmed, witnesses to a miracle that reveals not just Jesus’ power over nature, but His identity as God.
It invites the viewer to consider: Who is this, even the wind and the waves obey Him?
