This dramatic painting draws from the parable Jesus told in Matthew 25, where ten virgins await the arrival of the bridegroom. Only five were prepared, with oil in their lamps, while the others, caught off guard, found themselves unready when the moment came.
The artwork centres on one of the wise virgin, standing firm with her lamp full and burning, while the foolish virgins are at the right frantically reaching out with empty lamps, begging for oil, but it is too late now: The midnight trumpet sounds, and the cry of the bridegroom echoes.
The piece captures the contrast between readiness and regret, urgency and delay, light and darkness. Through the vivid colours and expressive figures, this work calls the viewer to spiritual vigilance and preparedness for the coming of Christ.
